Ann Darr was author of ten books of poems, including St. Ann’s Gut (1971), The Myth of a Woman’s Fist (1973), Cleared for Landing (1978), and The Twelve Pound Cigarette (1990). She taught creative writing at American University and The Writer’s Center.
She was born Lois Ann Russell in Bagley, Iowa. During World War II, Darr served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), and in the 1940s she worked for NBC Radio, where her duties included broadcasting the program “The Women of Tomorrow.” She lived in the DC region (first in Alexandria, then in Bethesda) from the mid-1950s until her death at age 87.
