Ann McLaughlin

(August 29, 1928December 20, 2016)

The author of nine novels, Ann McLaughlin earned a PhD in literature from American University in 1978. She taught at The Writer’s Center and served on its Board of Directors, and had fellowships at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Yaddo, and the Studios of Key West.

Her books include: Lightning in July (1989), The Balancing Pole (1991), Sunset at Rosalie (1996), Maiden Voyage (1999), The House on Q Street (2002), Leaving Bayberry House (2010), Summer Trials (2011), and Amy and George (2013). Many of her books made use of personal history, such as McLaughlin’s bout with polio in Lightning in July, or a young girl’s experience of WWI-era Washington in The House on Q Street. A ninth novel, A Triangle was released posthumously in 2017.
