Duffy was the author of three novels: Disaster Was My God: A Novel of the Outlaw Life of Arthur Rimbaud (2012), Last Comes the Egg (1997), and The World As I Found It (1987). The latter, a fictionalized account of the life of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, won the Whiting Award, and was hailed by the New York Times as “one of the more astonishing literary debuts in recent memory.” His honors also include a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Duffy was born in DC and raised in Garrett Park, Maryland. He earned a degree in English from the University of Maryland, and continued to live in the area for the rest of his life, working as a speechwriter for financial executives at Fannie Mae and Deloitte. His articles appeared in such journals as Harper’s and Life Magazine. At the time of his death, he was completing a fourth novel.
