Carl Bode, a university professor and poet, lived in the area from 1947 until just before his death in 1993. He published over thirty books, including two books of poems, a biography of H.L. Mencken, and edited the collected poems of Henry Thoreau.
Bode founded the American Studies Association and The Mencken Society, and served as president of the Thoreau Society of America. He was Cultural Attache to the American Embassy in London from 1957 to 1959. Bode taught English and American Studies for nearly 40 years at the University of Maryland.
His books of poems are The Sacred Seasons (1975) and Practical Magic (1981).
