The author and editor of over 30 books of nonfiction, inspirational, and fiction works, Catherine Marshall was born in Johnson City, Tennessee. In 1936 she graduated from Agnes Scott College and married Peter Marshall. The couple moved to Washington, DC, where her husband served as minister of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church and Chaplain of the United States Senate. After her husband’s death in 1949, Marshall wrote a memoir of her husband. A Man Called Peter (1951) which became a nationwide success and was adapted as a film starring Richard Todd, Jean Peters and Marjorie Rambeau.
Her novel, Christy (1967) was inspired by the story of her mother’s time in the mountains teaching the impoverished children of Appalachia. Christy was adapted as a CBS television series, starring Kellie Martin.
