Edith Hamilton

(August 12, 1867May 31, 1963)

A classicist and educator whose book Mythology (1942), remains in print after six decades, Edith Hamilton lived in DC for her last twenty years, until her death in 1963.

Hamilton was head of the Bryn Mawr Preparatory School for Girls for 26 years. After her retirement she lived in New York and DC, dedicating herself to writing. Her ten books of nonfiction include The Greek Way (1930), The Roman Way (1932), The Prophets of Israel (1936), The Great Age of Greek Literature (1943), and Witness to the Truth: Christ and His Interpreters (1949).
