Gideon Ferebee, Jr. is the author of two volumes of poetry, Searching for the Boy (2002), and Reflections Of (2002), and a collection of essays, Out! to Lead (1994). He moved to DC in the early 1970s, and was part of DC’s performance poetry scene centered around ENIKAlley Coffeehouse and DC Space.
Ferebee was an early member of Us Helping Us, a community-based AIDS service organization that focused on reducing HIV among African American gay men. He also worked with the DC Black Repertory Theatre, the Minority Arts Ensemble, and was a founding member of the poetry collective Station to Station, whose members included Larry Duckette, Greg Ford, Essex Hemphill, Chris Prince, and Garth Tate. He also collaborated with Chasen Gaver and Michelle Parkerson, and performed in the film Tongues Untied (1989). He worked for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and died of pancreatic cancer at age 54.
