Howard Nemerov

(February 29, 1920July 5, 1991)

Howard Nemerov was twice appointed U.S. Poet Laureate, in 1963–64 and 1988–90. In addition, he was the recipient of the National Book Award, the Bollingen Prize, and the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. He was a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

In World War II, Nemerov served as a pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force and the U.S. Army Air Force. After the war, he taught at several universities, including Hamilton College, Bennington College, Brandeis University, and the Washington University in St. Louis.

Nemerov is the author of 13 books of poems, including The Salt Garden (1955), Winter Lightning (1968), War Stories (1987), and Trying Conclusions (1992). He also wrote four novels and a nonfiction book on teaching called The Oak in the Acorn (1987).
