The author of 16 novels, as well as short stories and essays, Julia Magruder was born in Charlottesville, Virginia but lived most of her life in DC. Her literary work is sentimental, focusing on stories of love and defending the post-Civil War reputation of the South. Her essays addressed more serious social issues, such as child labor laws and women’s changing roles.
Her books include: Across the Chasm (1885), A Magnificent Plebian (1888), Miss Ayr of Virgina, and Other Stories (1896), A Heaven-Kissing Hill(1899), A Sunny Southerner (1901), and Her Husband: The Mystery of a Man (1911). A week before her death she became the first American woman to be awarded the “Order of the Palms” by the French Academie.
