McMurtry was the author of over thirty novels, including Lonesome Dove, winner of a Pulitzer Prize in 1986, and Terms of Endearment. He was co-winner of the Oscar for Best Screenplay in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain. For many years, while owner of Booked Up, a bookstore in Georgetown, he lived in an apartment above the shop. When the bookshop closed after three decades in the mid 1990s, McMurtry moved back to his hometown of Archer City, Texas. In his autobiography, Books: A Memoir (2008), McMurtry wrote that he viewed himself “as essentially a bookseller” who wrote on the side.
