Lou Stovall

Stovall, a master printmaker, ran Workshop, Inc., a printmaking studio, in the converted garage behind this home. His silkscreen posters were commissioned by a wide range of DC-area cultural venues, as well as being used by SNCC and other civil rights groups. He worked in collaboration with numerous other notable visual artists, including Sam Gilliam, Elizabeth Catlett, Gene Davis, David Driskell, Jacob Lawrence, and Josef Albers. Stovall studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and Howard University (where he graduated in 1966 with a BA in art history). Stovall taught at the Corcoran School, served as Vice Chair on the DC Commission on the Arts, and was a board member of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation. His artwork is in the collections of the Phillips Collection, and the White House. He is the author of a book that combines his poetry and visual art, Of the Land (2022), edited by his son William Stovall.
