Louis Untermeyer

(October 1, 1885December 18, 1977)

Louis Untermeyer lived here while serving as U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant from 1961 to 1963.

He wrote for socialist journals The New Masses and The Liberator, and was named during the hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, and subsequently blacklisted.

The author and editor of almost 100 books, Untermeyer published poetry, biography, short fiction, literature for children, memoirs, essays, translations, and a series of popular anthologies of poetry. His books of poems include: These Times (1917), Burning Bush (1928), and Long Feud (1962).

His anthologies include Modern American Poetry (first published in 1919, republished in six editions), A Treasury of Great Poems (1942 and 1955), The Golden Book of Poems for the Very Young (1971), and A Galaxy of Verse (1978).
