Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was born in this house in 1896, and lived in DC until leaving for college in 1914. Her father, A.F. Kinnan was the longtime head of the Brookland Citizens Association when Brookland was a suburb of Washington. She is best known for the novel The Yearling, which won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939.
Rawlings is author of seven other books of fiction, including Cross Creek (1942), Jacob’s Ladder (1950), and The Sojourner (1953), and one cookbook, Cross Creek Cookery (1942). From 1928 until the end of her life, Rawlings lived on a 72-acre orange grove in rural Florida.
