Myrna Loy

(August 2, 1905December 14, 1993)

Myrna Loy, an actress best known for her roles in the Thin Man movies, as well as such films as The Best Years of Our Lives and Cheaper by the Dozen, is the author of an autobiography, Myrna Loy: Being and Becoming (1987). She lived in this tiny, one-bedroom house from 1950 to 1951 with her fourth husband, Howland H. Sargeant.

Loy was President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s favorite actress, and invited her numerous times to the White House. She developed a friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt. In later life, Loy served as Co-Chair of the Advisory Council of the National Committee Against Discrimination in Housing. In 1948, she became the first Hollywood celebrity to become a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO. In 1988, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
