Nancy Johnson was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and received degrees from Randolph-Macon College (BA, 1970), Lehigh University (MEd, 1972), Johns Hopkins University (MA, 1987), and the University of Arizona (MFA, 1989). She published a book of poems, Zoo and Cathedral, set largely in DC, which won the 1996 White Pine Press Poetry Prize.
Johnson lived in DC at this address from 1991 to 1999. While here, she taught at various institutions, including Mount Vernon College, Hood College, and the summer program run by Johns Hopkins through their Center for Talented Youth. She later moved to Oakland, California, where she lived until her early death from cancer.
