Neil Merton Judd

(October 27, 1887December 19, 1976)

Neil Merton Judd is the author of the memoir Men Met Along the Trail: Adventures in Archeology (1968), as well as numerous scientific articles. For 39 years, Judd was an archeologist for the Smithsonian Institution. He was an active member of the American Anthropological Association (serving, at different times, as President and Treasurer). He is best known for his excavation of Pueblo Bonito and other sites in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, although he did work throughout the American Southwest.

Judd joined the staff of the Smithsonian (then called the National Museum) as an aide in anthropology, with nothing more than an undergraduate degree, in 1911. He completed a masters degree from the George Washington University in 1913, while continuing to work full-time, and participating in digs (or leading them) every summer. Judd helped create the model for interdisciplinary fieldwork widely used today, and was known for his generosity to younger colleagues.

The four buildings of the Westchester made it the largest luxury apartment complex in DC for its first twenty years. The exterior is notable for Tudor details. In the interior, variations were made to six basic apartment floor plans to ensure few units would be identical, and penthouse apartments have individual roof decks. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the Westchester vied with the Wardman Tower for the greatest concentration of distinguished residents. The Westchester was particularly popular with congressmen, senators, and judges. It was designed to include an in-house restaurant, drug store, grocery, beauty salon, barber shop, library, and full-service laundry, laid out on ten acres of park-like grounds that included a formal sunken garden with a fountain. The complex was converted to a co-op in 1953.
