Reed Whittemore founded the literary journal Furioso with James Angleton while they were students at Yale, and started it up again after a hiatus while he served in the air force during WWII, continuing to publish until 1953. He also served as literary editor of The New Republic, Carlton Miscellany, and Delos. He was a professor of English at Carleton College (1947–1964) and the University of Maryland (1967–1984).
Whittemore was the author of over 20 books. His 13 books of poems include Heroes and Heroines (1946), The Boy from Iowa (1962), The Mother’s Breast and the Father’s House (1974), and The Feel of Rock (1982). He also published essays, reviews, short fiction, a biography of William Carlos Williams and three books of combined autobiographies of multiple poets, and edited the poems of Robert Browning. His memoir, Against the Grain, was published in 2007.
Whittemore was twice named U.S. Poet Laureate, in 1964 and 1984, and also served as Poet Laureate of Maryland (1985–1988), and won the Bronze Star for his military service. He was the recipient of the National Council on the Arts Award for lifelong contribution to American Letters and the Award of Merit Medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
He lived at the first address from approximately 1967 until a few years before his death. The second address was his home in 1964, while he served for the first time as Poet Laureate Consultant to the Library of Congress.
