Theodore Roosevelt is the author of over forty books. His subjects ranged from nature, travel adventure, American history, and the history of war, to biographies and an autobiography. Titles include: The Summer Birds of the Adirondacks in Franklin County, New York (1877), Essays on Practical Politics (1888), The Winning of the West (four volumes, 1889-1896), The Rough Riders (1899), Oliver Cromwell (1900), Realizable Ideals (1913), A Book Lover’s Holiday in the Open (1916), and Fear God and Take Your Own Part (1916). His Autobiography was published in 1913.
Roosevelt lived at this Dupont Circle address while serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1897–1898). Other offices he held include New York City Police Commissioner, Governor of New York, Vice President to William McKinley, and, upon McKinley’s assassination, 26th U.S. President. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.
He is remembered locally with Theodore Roosevelt Island, a National Park Service site, which includes hiking trails and a memorial plaza with a statue and engraved quotes; and the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge spanning the Potomac River.

Built of Aquia Creek sandstone, this 130-room Neoclassical mansion was largely destroyed by arson during the War of 1812, and reconstructed in 1817. Additions include the South Portico (1824), the North Portico (1829), the West Wing (1901), and the Oval Office (1909). In 1949, the inside was completely gutted to stabilize the building with steel framing. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. in 1935. The mansion was named a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
