William W. Warner won the Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction in 1977 for Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs, and the Chesapeake Bay.
Warner worked for the U.S. Information Agency beginning in 1953. In 1961, he became Program Coordinator for Latin America for the newly-created Peace Corps. From 1964 to 1972, he held administrative posts for the Smithsonian Institution.
Warner was the author of four books of nonfiction. He followed Beautiful Swimmers (1976) with: Distant Water: The Fate of North Atlantic Fisherman (1983); At Peace with Their Neighbors (1994), a history of Catholicism in DC; and Into the Porcupine Cave and Other Odysseys(1999), a collection of essays.
