Zahara Heckscher

Zahara Heckscher is the author of How to Live Your Dream of Volunteering Overseas (2002), and was a contributing editor for Transitions Abroad. She volunteered in Zambia and Nicaragua. She published articles on international travel, the Transpacific Partnership, and the writing process.

Heckscher was a lecturer at the University of Maryland, coordinator of “Writing Staycation,” a non-residential writing retreat at the Writer’s Center, and developed “The Poetry Game,” a card game that facilitates the writing of poems that was published in English, Yiddish, Arabic, and Spanish. She also translated The Memoir of Helmut Heckscher, from Kindertransport to WWII (2017), and authored the unpublished novel “Spice Lady.” She died of cancer at age 53.
